Cairo’s Environmental Initiatives: A Path Towards Sustainability

Cairo’s Environmental Initiatives: A Path Towards Sustainability

Cairo, a city rich in history and culture, is facing modern environmental challenges. In response, the city has launched several initiatives aimed at promoting sustainability and improving the quality of life for its residents.

Integrating Environmental Considerations into Development

In March 2026, Egypt’s Minister of Local Development and Environment, Manal Awad, emphasized the importance of embedding environmental considerations into local development frameworks. This approach aims to enhance resource efficiency and advance sustainable development across governorates. Key areas of focus include integrated solid waste management, upgrades to sanitation infrastructure, and strengthening environmental inspection systems. Awad highlighted that incorporating environmental criteria into development planning is essential for the sustainability of national and service projects, as well as for enhancing citizens’ quality of life. Community-Based Waste Management

The Qalyubeya Governorate, part of Greater Cairo, has been implementing an Integrated Community-Based Solid Waste Management project since 2013. This initiative aims to improve waste collection services in cities like Khosoos and Khanka while enhancing the working conditions of informal waste collectors. Given that Cairo generates over 21 million tons of municipal waste annually, such projects are crucial for managing waste effectively and promoting environmental sustainability. Source

VeryNile: Cleaning the Nile and Empowering Communities

VeryNile, a Cairo-based, youth-led organization, collaborates with local fishermen and crafters to collect, recycle, and upcycle plastic waste from the Nile River. This initiative not only addresses the pressing issue of plastic pollution but also supports the livelihoods of communities dependent on the river. By engaging over 180 local fishermen, VeryNile collects approximately one ton of plastic daily, contributing significantly to the health of the Nile and the Mediterranean Sea. Source

Promoting Sustainable Transportation

In February 2024, the Environment Ministry participated in a cycling marathon titled “Clean and Green Cairo with Cycling.” This event aimed to promote the use of bicycles as an eco-friendly alternative to traditional fuel-consuming transportation methods. By encouraging cycling, the initiative seeks to reduce air pollution and combat climate change, aligning with broader efforts to promote sustainable urban mobility. Source

Addressing Air Pollution and Climate Change

In September 2020, the World Bank approved a $200 million project to support Egypt’s efforts in reducing air and climate pollution in Greater Cairo. The project focuses on reducing vehicle emissions, improving solid waste management, and strengthening air quality management systems. These efforts are part of Egypt’s Sustainable Development Strategy: Egypt Vision 2030, aiming to halve particulate matter pollution and develop a robust climate impact mitigation program. Source

Through these diverse initiatives, Cairo is taking significant steps towards a more sustainable and environmentally friendly future, addressing challenges such as pollution, waste management, and climate change.
