Cairo, a bustling metropolis with a rich history, is facing modern environmental challenges. In response, the city has launched several initiatives aimed at promoting sustainability and improving the quality of life for its residents.
Integrating Environmental Considerations into Development
The Egyptian government has taken significant steps to embed environmental considerations into local development plans. This integration aims to enhance resource efficiency and advance sustainable development across governorates. By incorporating environmental criteria into planning, the government seeks to ensure the sustainability of national and service projects, ultimately improving citizens’ quality of life.
VeryNile: Cleaning the Nile and Empowering Communities
VeryNile, a Cairo-based, youth-led organization, is addressing plastic pollution in the Nile River. Collaborating with over 180 local fishermen, the initiative collects approximately one ton of plastic daily. This effort not only protects the vital waterway but also supports communities that depend on it. Additionally, VeryNile provides employment opportunities, particularly for women from underprivileged communities, who are trained to recycle plastic waste into products that support sustainable livelihoods.
Improving Air Quality and Combating Climate Change
In 2020, the World Bank approved a $200 million project to support Egypt’s efforts in reducing air and climate pollution in Greater Cairo. The project focuses on reducing vehicle emissions, improving solid waste management, and strengthening air and climate decision-making systems. These efforts aim to address the city’s significant environmental health issues and enhance residents’ quality of life.
Promoting Environmental Awareness
The Ministry of Environment has been actively promoting sustainability through various campaigns. At the 56th Cairo International Book Fair, the ministry’s pavilion featured interactive environmental activities, workshops, and awareness campaigns. Initiatives like the Go Green campaign, Eco Egypt, and E-Tadwer for e-waste management were showcased, aiming to educate the public on resource conservation and environmental protection.
Encouraging Sustainable Transportation
To promote environmentally friendly transportation, the Ministry of Environment participated in a cycling marathon under the theme “clean and green Cairo with cycling.” This event aimed to encourage the use of bicycles as an alternative to cars, thereby reducing pollution and combating climate change. The ministry has also implemented bicycle tracks to further support this initiative.
These collective efforts reflect Cairo’s commitment to addressing environmental challenges and fostering a sustainable future for its residents.
